My diploma work is a upholstery fabric collection for the Austrian Backhausen Interior Textiles. The collection is divided into three different themes, each of which has its own atmosphere and target customer group.
Vienna Caf? is the most sophisticated of the three themes. I began the design process by choosing and making patterns based on Wiener Werkst?tte models from the Backhausen archive ? they gave me the idea for the other designs. I also used art nouveau architecture and a mental image of fine Viennese ladies having a coffee party as a source of inspiration.
For the second theme, Sorbet, I wanted a richness of colours and patterns as well as a carefree, happy mood. A starting point for the set was a summery garden party from which the subjects of the cuts are picked.
Autumn is a stylised, nature-themed theme. Its fabrics are calm, soft and the most Scandinavian in my collection. I wanted them to have the feel of a hazy, late summer evening.

I will graduate this spring from the School of Design, where my major is textile design. In my MA studies I have focused on industrial textile design. Apart from studies, I have also worked as freelance textile designer and design assistant, designing patterns, prints and colour schemes, and assisting in the design of fabric collections. I have designed many print patterns, including the 20th anniversary pattern of the Pirkka brand. In the past 12 months I have been working with and preparing my diploma work about jacquard fabrics, in the process learning a textile design skill that is rare in Finland.
