In my works I want to shed light on how one's cultural background and the life one has led affect how his or her surroundings are perceived. Exhibited is a for me important brutally ugly university building made of concrete from Buenos Aires. The other three works are sceneries of my childhood Helsinki, Myllypuro.
The question that interests me is what a pleasant urban space looks like and does it exist in Helsinki Tourist vistas, beautiful sights, valuable buildings or fancy districts might not interest me at all and on the other hand an ?officially? insignificant place can be most important to one human being. And yet, why is Helsinki so grey?
I am Sonja Salomaki, 28, MA in textile art.
In my studies I have tried to get a comprehensive view of my discipline, and I have made both artistic and commercial projects. I think that internationalism is important in textile art, too, so I have concentrated on language studies, taking a year as an exchange student in Argentina and as an intern in France.
In the midst of artistic uncertainty and madness, I think it is vital to have life outside of design too.
