This bench was likely designed in 1928 as part of a group that was lined in the foyer of a cinema in Finland. The bench has curduroy upholstery. This bench, along with the others, were sold at auction when the cinema closed.

         		<title>Kleopatra, research on upholstery</title>

Kleopatra is a diploma work where the possibilities of upholstery have been explored open-mindedly, trying to come up with experimental yet sensible solutions.
Kleopatra&#039;s framework consists of a seat board and steel, the frame has been padded and upholstered almost completely. Dressing a whole piece of furniture in textile is an alternative solution to surface treatment options typical to our time like for example painting. Upholstering parts of the supporting structure helps evade costly mould expenses like form-pressing.

Finnish-Japanese Naoto Niidome has studied spatial and furniture design and fashion design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. The influence of two cultures, as well as studies in different areas, show clearly in his work. Niidome&#039;s designs are characterised by a timeless elegance, three-dimensionality, experimentation with materials and techniques, innovation and humour. Of his latest works, the Bamboo House concept and collections for Marimekko have attracted a great deal of publicity.
