The Tulip Chair was introduced in 1957. Eero Saarinen wanted to create furniture that would "clean up the slum of legs." The result was the Tulip Chairs, stool, and a series of tables all with a pedastal base. The chair is made from molded fibreglass and has a swivel seat.

The tulip stool went into production in 1957 and had its 50th anniversary in 2007. The stool has a swivel seat that has a padded cushion. It was designed at the same time as Saarinen's famous Tulip Chair. Saarinen wanted to create furniture without legs. As a result the chairs he designed during this period, as well as the tables, were designed with a pedastal base.

The Tulip chair was designed in 1956 for the Knoll company of New York City. Designed primarily as a chair to match the complementary dining table, the chair has the smooth lines of modernism and is experimental with materials. The chair is considered a classic of industrial design. It is also considered to represent the "space age" for its curves and use of materials.

In a 1956 cover story in Time magazine, Eero Saarinen said he was designing a collection to "clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home." Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table and Tulip Chair Collection and obliterated the "slum" by creating a cast aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. These pieces went into production in 1957.
