The Lighthouse short-film is the result of a course called Special effects in movies, held in 2004 at the School of Film, Television and Production Design in the University of Art and Design Helsinki. I was in charge of designing and executing the digital effects for the film.
This artistic segment of my diploma work is a part of the development work of digital production design going on in the Department of Production Design. It is the first compositing project carried out in the University of Art and Design Helsinki, where material shot on film has been used and working with digital effects using film resolution has been researched.

I graduated as Master of Arts from the School of Motion Picture, Television and Production Design in December 2005. My specialisation includes virtual set design and digital effects. In addition to designing and producing virtual sets for film and television, I have also done animations as well as video and advertising graphics. Apart from film and television, I am also interested in the visual design of computer games and other New Media.

Placebo is an enigmatic thriller about a young woman, Edith, whom a man abandons outside the city in an unconscious state. Edith, who has lost her memory, returns to the city and tries to continue living her life peacefully, but certain events lead her back to her husband - the man, who is Edith's worst enemy. The film is the diploma work of director Taneli Mustonen, cinematographer Daniel Lindholm and production designer Sanna-Mari Pirkola for the School of Motion Picture, Television and Production Design. It has been produced by the Theater Academy of Finland in association with the University of Art and Design Helsinki and YLE/FST.

Taneli Mustonen got a box seat to the world of cinema already as a child, when his parents took upon themselves to keep alive the supply of movies in Outokumpu by continuing to operate the cinema Kino Marita as a family business when it would otherwise have been closed down. The cinema reportoire broadened with new and different types of films in the 1990s when the family opened another theatre in Joensuu, specialising in movies imported by Cinema Mondo. As a schoolboy, Taneli worked as projectionist in the cinemas. He still likes to work as a projectionist whenever he can to keep up the vanishing skill of projecting 35mm film.
Inspired by his own films, amateur theatricals and filmmaking, Taneli sought admission to study film directing in 1998. He has directed three short films, as well as advertisements and music videos. In 2005 he worked as direction assistant at the filmmaking school in the University.
Apart from directing, Taneli Mustonen has also written scripts. In 1998 he received the filmmaking school's award for the best short film script.

Daniel Lindholm discovers his passion at the age of 20. Childhood stories and music and the photographic experiments of his youth merge together ? the result is cinematography.
A couple of years later he enrolls in the University of Art and Design Helsinki and gradually learns how to process his works and his learning. At the end of his third study year and the beginning of the fourth, he develops enormously as a cinematographer. He is moderately satisfied with his latest works. Luckily the films have all been ambitious projects and in very different genres. Daniel now feels he is ready to meet new challenges and wants to contribute his own way of looking through the camera to the industry.

Tempera on board, video

In my work I explore the division of everyday life. How a person moves between real and virtual space - in the constant grip of leisure and work.
The advancement of technology has brought freedom. Work is no longer bound to location. Ever more frequently work gets mixed with free time and the normal position of people from the western world has become sitting in front of a computer, both in the case of work and leisure. How long is man able to balance between survival and extreme fatigue?

My subject in the University is film. Over the years my interest has moved increasingly towards experimental cinema and video, in particular the artistic potential of their light-weight and experimental production methods. I am fascinated by the flow of film and video art between popular entertainment and traditional arts. I studied only fine arts for a few years very intensively, because I wanted to learn the traditions of the fine arts. It has helped me find my own way of combining different media in a sensible way.
