Furniture concept out of CompactZ by Industrial designer Simo Puintila

These are the first prototypes of a furniture concept made by industrial designer Simo Puintila. The concept is supported by Arts Council of Finland - Design Council, Formica Iki Ltd., UIAH Protostudio.

The idea of the concept

"The idea of the concept is based on fairly simple and old idea of a joint with three elements only. The seat plate is used as a locking element for the structure so no glue, screws or other components are needed for assembly.

CompactZ is a product of Formica Iki Ltd. It is massive Iki board manufactured out of colored papersheets which are compressed as a board with special resin. The outcome is an extremely strong and visually variable material.

By Cnc-milling the surface of CompactZ I have created a kind of 3-dimensional graphics. By varying the colors of papersheets it is possible to create very interesting and visually strong patterns."

	                WRITTEN ON THE WIND

A new collection of handmade clothes and accessories, by Hella Hernberg, pays homage to a legendary film by Douglas Sirk from 1956.

Underlying the ideas and style of Written on the Wind, there are various influences and impressions of the cinema, with its nostalgia and dream realities, imaginary characters and their intertwining stories. Also the vintage fabrics used in the collection, bring in their own sense of storyline. The clothes, having been made by hand in small numbers, are all individual characters, with individual names. They are waiting for the user to step into the roles and continue the stories -- half real, half imagined.

Written on the Wind available at Lux Shop (Uudenmaankatu 26, Helsinki).

How can a high end kitchen knife designed by F.A. Porsche get any better? Might be impossible but we had to try.

We asked Nada Go-Go, dog design, Inka Järvinen, Aleksi Perälä, Noa Bembibre and Pekka Toivanen to make some art on the Chroma type 301 knives. Here are the results.

The knives are on display at Designpartners07 exhibition during September 18-20 at Cable Factory.
