friend drink station

the Friend Drink Station is an rfid-enabled beer printer. At the picnic 06 and 07 conferences, you could take your rfid badge and a friend to the station, and use it to create a new friend (both on the picnic website and in real life). To celebrate your new friend, the station would print two drink tickets, valid only if you went to the bar together. The friend drink station was a project by mediamatic. Code was written by Andy Smith aka Termie, construction and design were by Willem Velthoven and Nadya Peek (me!).

UPDATE: 2.6.2006
I'm interested in the idea of documenting the history of objects when they travel from one person to another. On Thinglink it is possible to give things to other people (go to My Things, click Give). By Giving, you give the other person the right to edit the description of your thing. For example, yesterday after my presentation I gave the physical Pertti robotti to Nicolas Nova. Now, I'm also going to move Pertti from my portfolio of things to his. That means that he will be Pertti's new author.

How can objects communicate the meanings we give them?

Otso bear is one of my first experiments with RFID tags. Now it carries an invisible link; the url address of this particular web page. When you touch it with a reader phone, your phone will automatically connect you to my blog http://www.hobbyprincess.com.

The reader phone I used was a Nokia 3220 with NFC (Near Field Communication) shells. These phones are not mainstream but you can get one from http://www.toptunniste.fi/topshop/.
